Title of presentation:	Assessing Geometry Concepts of Post-Bac Teacher Candidates with the Voyage 200
Abstract:
Propelled by massive layoffs in American business and industry and the lure of job security associated with teaching, interest in teaching mathematics has grown in recent years. Re-educating post-baccalaureate students in the current ways of learning and teaching mathematics must begin with redefining their conception of what learning geometry looks like in today's classroom. Developing and assessing geometry concepts using technology is alien to their fram of reference, and thus serves as a means for updating their rusty mathematical skills. Utilization of Geometer's Sketchpad on the Voyage 200 is an integral component of their technology-based re-education. This presentation will highlight ways in which the Voyage 200 is used to prepare second-career mathematics teachers to engage and assess middle grades students in geometric thinking, reasoning, and problem solving. Highlights from practices and assessments that have occurred in a geometry course for both post-bac teacher candidates and practicing middle grades teachers will be shared. Samples of assessment including portfolio entries and candidate responses will be included.
