Abstract:
Public-key procedures of encryption and decryption have become very important tools in modern cryptography as they offer a lot of advantages when compared with traditional methods. Basically there is some underlying mathematical problem such as e.g. factoring big integers, the descrete lograrithm problem or the subset sum problem, which is thought to be hard and can be used to construct a so-called trapdoor function. Although no devastating attack on the most common public-key cryptosystems like RSA or the ElGamal scheme are known, there are a number of pitfalls which have to be avoided when implementing them. In my lecture I will use DERIVE to illustrate some of the attacks, which might be successful due to an improper implementation.
